Intelligent Vehicle Systems (IVSs) employing vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communications harness the potential of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to create a safer, smarter and more efficient transportation network.The main objective of this proposal is to design, analyze and evaluate a new generation inter-vehicle communication system to instantly disseminate, hover and route critical safety information to vehicles and emergency services.

The system can potentially be used to accommodate non safety applications such as traffic monitoring, platooning, text measaging, distributed passenger teleconferencing, music downloading, roadside e-advertisements etc. Vehicle to Vehicle Communications will be employed to establish vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) which may also communicate with fixed infrastructure on the roadside to create a medium over which the emergency information will propagate to the interested clients. The system will comprise of three main components. A traffic aware short-range multihop broadcast subsystem which upon detection of a road hazard will instantly disseminate emergency information to vehicles in the vicinity of the hazard; a hovering subsystem which will maintain the emergency information in a relevant area around the hazard for some period of time notifying approaching vehicles of the imminent danger; and a multi-hop routing subsystem which will facilitate information exchange over large distances.

Major components of the system will be adaptive, in the sense that they will take information dissemination and routing decisions based on the road traffic conditions. The design methodogy will be interdiciplinary in nature in the sense that we will develop solutions combining our expertise from the fields of computer science, networks, graph theory and optimization. The resulting system will be evaluated using a combination of the VISSIM and the OPNET (or Ns) simulators on carefully chosen sections of the Cyprus traffic network.

Welcome to the website of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus. The Department has experienced significant growth over the last few years with strong groups in artificial intelligence, computer architecture, computer networks, data management, graphics and virtual reality, internet computing, software engineering and theoretical computer science. The Department offers a Bachelor degree in Computer Science with 7 different specializations as well as a number of Master degrees and a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science.

The Department has a strong research infrastructure comprising high-performance clusters and storage area networks, cloud computing facilities, smart-phones and sensing devices and virtual reality equipment. Since 2005, our Department has been involved in more than 160 research projects funded from both the European Union and the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation with total funding of over 21.5 million euros.
